Additionally, cacao has been shown to decrease LDL, or "bad," cholesterol levels and mitigate inflammation, potentially reducing the likelihood of experiencing a heart attack or stroke.

Epicatechin, a specific flavonoid found in cacao, is believed to aid certain aspects of brain health, such as cognition and blood circulation, potentially decreasing the risk of dementia. Several studies have indicated that polyphenols, including those present in cocoa, may reduce the likelihood of neurodegenerative disorders by enhancing brain function and blood flow.

In addition to cocoa's positive impact on brain function, it may also have beneficial effects on mood and symptoms of depression. Cocoacontains several chemical compounds that could provide mood-boosting effects, including flavonoids, caffeine, serotonin, and tryptophan and antioxidants. A survey involving more than 13,600 adults in the U.S. found that eating dark chocolate, which shares many compounds with cacao powder, could potentially reduce the likelihood of experiencing symptoms of clinical depression. However, further long-term research is necessary to validate these findings.
