The Health Benefits of Cocoa

• May reduce high blood pressure by improving nitric oxide levels

  According to a 2017 review, cocoa has been linked to the reduction of high blood pressure. Cocoapowder is rich in flavonoids, compounds known to lower blood pressure, enhance blood flow to the brain and heart, and aid in preventing blood clots.

• May reduce the risk of heart disease

  Studies have linked the flavanols found in cacao and cocoa with elevated levels of nitric oxide in the bloodstream. Nitric oxide facilitates the relaxation of arteries and blood vessels, promoting improved blood circulation. Additionally, cacao has been shown to decrease LDL, or "bad," cholesterol levels and mitigate inflammation, potentially reducing the likelihood of experiencing a heart attack or stroke.

• May enhance brain and cognitive function

  Epicatechin, a specific flavonoid found in cacao, is believed to aid certain aspects of brain health, such as cognition and blood circulation, potentially decreasing the risk of dementia. Several studies have indicated that polyphenols, including those present in cocoa, may reduce the likelihood of neurodegenerative disorders by enhancing brain function and blood flow.

• May improve mood and symptoms of depression

  In addition to cocoa's positive impact on brain function, it may also have beneficial effects on mood and symptoms of depression. Cocoacontains several chemical compounds that could provide mood-boosting effects, including flavonoids, caffeine, serotonin, and tryptophan and antioxidants. A survey involving more than 13,600 adults in the U.S. found that eating dark chocolate, which shares many compounds with cacao powder, could potentially reduce the likelihood of experiencing symptoms of clinical depression. However, further long-term research is necessary to validate these findings.
